REST: When You Need Permission to Pause

Maybe you chose rest because your body has been asking for something your schedule keeps refusing to give it.

Perhaps you have convinced yourself that you will rest after the work is done, after everyone is okay, after the bills are paid, after the decision is made or after you finally feel caught up. But, life has a way of continually producing another task.

If rest must be earned by completing everything, you may never believe you have done enough to deserve it.

So let this be your permission:

Pause.

Not because you have finished everything.
Not because you have proven your productivity.
Not because no one needs you.

Pause because you are a person, not a machine.

Rest is not a reward, it is a requirement.

In the space between, we are often tempted to rush. We believe movement will quiet the uncertainty, so we keep working, planning, producing and searching. But constant motion can make it difficult to recognize what this season is trying to reveal.

Rest gives you room to hear yourself again. It creates space between the stimulus and your response. Between what happened and what you decide it means. Between the pressure to act and the wisdom to choose how you want to move.

Rest does not always mean sleeping for hours or escaping your responsibilities. It may mean taking three intentional breaths, turning your phone over, sitting in silence, allowing someone else to help, or choosing not to solve today/tonight what can wait until tomorrow.

You do not have to reach complete exhaustion before your need for rest becomes valid. You do not have to collapse before you are permitted to stop.

You are worthy of care before the breaking point.

You are not lazy, you are between, and some of the most important work happening within you may require stillness rather than striving.

Take this with you:
I do not have to earn rest by exhausting myself. Pausing is part of how I protect, restore and return to myself.
